Mr Joaquín Martínez

Madrid, 29 July 1970

MADRID SPAIN

Dear Sir:

We wish to apologise for addressing you without a previous introduction, trusting that you already know our background.

As you know, our last notes sent to your brothers in Barcelona and Madrid have reached your hands, so we wish to clarify some additional aspects concerning the content of those communications.

We also believe it right to give you new clarifications, however brief, on the new questions that have been raised among you as a result of our last letters received from London, León and Madrid.

Allow us to point out that, for obvious reasons, such clarifications cannot go beyond certain limits, nor would it be technically possible to answer many other doubts that are inevitably a reflection or projection of your concerns.

In the first place, we insist that the new emergencies arising from the investigations opened by a body of the U.S.A. (North America) must not be interpreted by you as a risk that might cause upsets or serious inconvenience to your brothers or to yourself.

To be precise; The first reactions of that department began years ago, when news inevitably leaked through to it that a crypto-group of persons who, moreover, claimed to come from a planetary structure different from EARTH (Ummo) was carrying out activities in various countries and in the States of the Federation themselves.

Naturally, in the socio-political context of the moment, such news aroused a certain degree of concern, above all as it was associated with the unusual exanthropological version, an interpretation that was not taken seriously by those officials.

New references and data concerning our postal and telephone contacts with citizens of Australia, Canada, Spain, France, Great Britain, Israel, Yugoslavia,... must have gradually accumulated, and the investigations into us intensified in parallel.

Such analyses constitute a commonplace, everyday practice, very normal and sensible, whenever the States of Earth have the technical means to sound out and carry out a function of prospection on related groups of a military, political or economic nature that extend over several nations.

At present the specialists of that federal government do not yet have proofs confirming the authenticity of our testimony. Distrust must necessarily arise with all its force towards men who operate with forms of conduct and technical means in no way similar to those of other organisations of a religious, philosophical, political, financial or military nature.

Of course, if our own version of our identity is accepted, such conduct would appear framed within more precise logical schemes. On the other hand, starting from other assumptions it must be extremely difficult to understand our reactions and initiatives. Cascades of interpretations then become inevitable, whose clusters (versions and sub-versions) would multiply to infinity.

In short, no other objective seems to drive our pursuers than to establish more direct contacts with us in order to determine once and for all our identity and the true nature of our motives.

Such a claim, which we consider logical and correct for the officials of so important a nation of Earth, we do not, on the other hand, judge viable, for reasons we have pointed out to you on previous occasions. The irreconcilability of our respective points of view of a moral and pragmatic order is therefore inevitable, with its sequel of activities of a police nature and of self-defence respectively. There is no reason to fear, however, that situations of violence will be reached, if only because we have the means to avoid that kind of tension, although we must not hide that this situation is very awkward for us and obliges us to apply measures of extreme prudence both in our journeys and studies and in the occasional contacts with our good friends in some countries.

On the fourth day of the month of May 1970 we sent a senior executive of the Federal Administration of the USA a note drafted by our own director of the UMMO expeditionary mission on Earth, which, among other paragraphs, included the following:

(It is my translation of their English version).

... We understand that a testimony expressed in writing and sent by ordinary post, of which you cannot even find a guarantee that it comes from our own group, will not be satisfactory to your Government, but it is not technically feasible for us to proceed otherwise, and even setting aside the diplomatic routines usual among you, we see no other means of making our voice heard. We trust that the perspicacity of your own specialists will understand this.

That government, the North American people and its respectable institutions have nothing to fear from our activities, and we can, without hesitating for an instant, extend this assertion to other States of all the continents of Earth.

The fears lately entertained by some responsible members that our activity might be interpreted as subordinate to the interests of the Soviet Union or of one of the governments of the People's Republics of Europe, or of the Cuban State or of the People's Republic of China, are totally unjustified and fallacious. Although we cannot offer you absolute proof of so categorical a statement, we invite you to carry out a careful examination of those data about our activities that reach you, in order to verify that such a hypothesis would not withstand the slightest critical judgement.

Our men have confined themselves to carrying out a systematic task of documentation regarding the ecological environment of the Planet, its geophysical characteristics and the culture of its peoples, taking special care not to harm voluntarily the economic or any other kind of interests of the citizens...

( and another paragraph: )

.... Whatever judgement you may form of us from now on, you will agree, sir, and we believe the advisers of.......…… will endorse this opinion, that it is not prudent that either your efforts to locate us or our activity should become known at an easily appreciable level to public opinion, as long as both parties have not clarified our respective positions...

We do not know, Mr Martínez, up to the present, of any official reaction to our note. Since then several more officials of the Federal Government have received specific instructions to collaborate in this service. In most of the Latin American States, in Spain and in Israel they enjoy a freedom of movement that consequently makes our tasks more difficult. We have even been obliged to move our European headquarters from West Berlin to another European city.

We will now refer to other matters:

Convey to your brother Mr Villagrasa Novoa our clarification that the document and the badge he has recently received do not come from my brothers; you may also inform him that the person to be considered the immediate source of that mailing lives in Barcelona. It would not be fair on our part, since such facts do not concern us in the least, to reveal the identity of this Spaniard.

I beg you to express to your brother Mr Mejorada Jiménez our concern at his participation in the analysis of another field of research concerning another constellation of facts associated with the group sponsored by your brother Sesma Manzano. We have sufficient information to describe such studies as very dangerous, lacking as you are in the appropriate defences and means. Extend our concern to your sister Miss Araujo and your other brothers Aguirre, Jordán and Muela.

We do not judge that the actions in these last months of Messrs Ribera and Villagrasa, in providing some reports to various persons in Spain and other Countries, constitute a transgression of any agreement with us.

Provided that such reports are not circulated in their entirety, nor endorsed by Mr Ribera's authority should they happen to appear in a medium of circulation, we consider that such acts have not exceeded tolerable limits. Nevertheless we beg you to be cautious before providing such copies. We insist that it would be preferable to maintain an abstention more in keeping with our criteria.

I must now clarify for you new aspects of our mutual and future relations.

We have observed some concern among you at a certain degree of ambiguity in our proposal. Although in the last resort it is you who must decide, we set out our opinion on the matter:

As regards the identity of the brother who in future is to receive our occasional information of a general nature, we would wish to grant him a certain degree of authority to discriminate, for the purpose of providing copies of such documents, against the person who at a given moment did not comply with the pertinent minimum requirements of discretion. Naturally this excludes any other arbitrary form of granting or refusing such information, which by its very nature is intended for you.

Do not take as an interference or a request for privilege the advice that such a person should combine the highest qualities as regards age, experience and training in this field, and recognised and documented authority. If you assess this objectively, you must recognise that such a person is your brother Antonio Ribera.

It would pain us if your brothers in Madrid felt marginalised or humiliated by our assessment. You would then be ignoring our feelings towards you, who at another time constituted an incalculably valuable group for our psychosocial experience.

In compensation, a truly representative director of Eridani could take on responsibility for the conditions in which future contacts are to be made, after consulting both groups.

We are in a position to tell you that the telephone conversation (no other more personal kind of interview is possible) would be fixed between 5 and 8 September 1970 (both days included) and that if by the twelfth of August you have not received data modifying the plan, it would take place in London. Should no member be able to travel on those dates, we would set you a new opportunity between the end of September and the first days of November.

In the preceding letters we gave you guidance on how such a contact would take place. Rest assured that if we see it as viable for that conversation to take place in Spain, we will gladly do so.

We earnestly repeat that the brother of yours who is selected must delay the choice of his residence in London until he is in that capital. We will take care of locating him. The telephone call would take place after 22 hours. He would therefore take the precaution of not leaving his chosen residence (hotel or private residence) during those dates.

I send you, sir, my affectionate greetings.
